2020 DG Installation

Although the venue was drastically different, 89 homes instead of the Quality Inn, the installation of our thirty-fourth District 5050 Governor, Carol Tichelman, looked much like last year’s installation ceremony.  Like her predecessor, PDG Brad Whitaker, DG Carol is from the Rotary Club of Chilliwack.  She is the 5th DG from the Chilliwack Club.
Larry Stinson, also a PDG from Chilliwack, was the Master of Ceremonies again this year.  After the anthems, a thought of the day from DGE Bev Harrington, Larry introduced dignitaries.  He then turned it over to PDG Brad for a power point review of his year and various recognitions and awards.  A change from last year is the scheduling of a separate online event to announce club awards on September 19.
DG Brad gave several “Step Up Awards”.  Included were PDG Lindagene Coyle as Finance Committee Chair, PDG Denis Boyd as Membership Chair, PDG Rod Thomsen as Training Chair, AG Dave Duskin as Communications Chair, and the entire Rotary Youth Exchange Executive Committee.
The Goldfinch Most Valuable Rotarian Award, was presented by PDG Brad to two District leaders:  Kevin Wood, who chaired this year’s District Conference that had to be cancelled, as well as the District webmaster, and to Pat Bond, the Governor’s Aide.
PDG Brad announced that Lee Harman is being recognized with the RI Service Award for a Polio-Free World. The award honors Rotarians who have made outstanding contributions to polio eradication efforts. With his road trip from Peking to Paris in Ms. Vicky, he raised awareness as well as over $50,000 for Polio Plus.
A Citation of Meritorious Service Award for his work on behalf of the Rotary Foundation was announced for PDG Larry Stinson.
About 150 Service Above Self Awards are presented to Rotarians world-wide.  PDG Rod Thomsen is one of the recipients this year.  There are also a limited number of Rotary International Distinguished Service Awards each year.  One of 42 this year is awarded to PDG Dave Robinson.
PDG Brad also recognized outgoing District treasurer Carly Gillespie, and three outgoing AG’s: Darrell Hooper, Dave Duskin & Del Vanderkerk.  In recognizing the District Board of Directors for the last year, PDG Brad pointed out that the District bylaws have been amended to expand the Board to include the Rotaract Committee Chair, and the Chairs of Training, Membership, Communications and Youth Services.  A 3rd year AG has also been added.
Last year PRIVP Dean Rohrs conducted the installation. This year she gave an address followed by a replay of the ‘DOGOODERY” song done at last year’s installation by Chilliwack’s band, The Rotations, featuring Rotarian Doug Wickers.
The installation of DG Carol and the District’s AG’s was conducted by District 5040 PDG Leigh Higinbotham.  He was the DG the year that DG Carol joined the Rotary Club of Prince George.  Because of his past inspiration, Carol asked him to install her as president of the Chilliwack Club, and now as DG.
Following the installation ceremony, DG Carol told us more about her Rotary journey and her aspirations for this year.  As is customary, the DG Banner was passed, not between clubs, but between the presidents of the Chilliwack Club during PDG Brad’s year and DG Carol’s year.  Following closing remarks by PDG Larry, the online event remained open for socializing.
